Description

The Ice Cliff Glacier offers an array of challenges and a rewarding descent. The approach up Mountaineers Creek requires a bit of navigation for those who lack familiarity. During the winter or any time when there is a low elevation snowpack, an extra four miles of road are necessary from Icicle Creek to the trailhead; fortunately, with good coverage the road also includes enjoyable skiing to the valley floor. The trick is to find the Ice Cliff Glacier and the couloir both in skiable condition. The glacier is easiest to climb and less objectively hazardous to climber's left. Often, when the glacier is in good condition the couloir poses considerable avalanche danger. The final barrier to a successful outing is a cornice at the top of the couloir, which is easy to rappel by slinging a convenient horn of solid granite.
