Description

The easiest route on Mount Shuksan and the most popular, the Sulphide Glacier is still worthy for the view alone. Sights of Mount Baker and the North Cascades promote feelings of awe when overwhelmed by the mass of future projects to undertake. From a road end you hike up an abandoned road grade which transitions into a trail after a few miles. Continue to Shannon Ridge where there are a few good camps. From here traverse beneath an obvious cliff. This will take you east off the ridge onto gentle rolling terrain that is very avalanche prone. There are other camps on the western edge of the glacier, but they will be on snow. Continue up the west side of the glacier, heading east to avoid steeper rolls. You will descend slightly before you reach the Shuksan Summit Pyramid. Many parties stop here, but skiing from the summit is an exhilarating prospect when conditions are favorable.
